life story & new crafts after the jump!
warning, this is picture chubby. :]~
In any event; I told my mom about this knitting store near my Nanni.. she used to be an avid knitter, but lately she hasn't really been motivated to knit.. since my Papa retired, she hasn't really driven much of anywhere, and they haven't really gone anywhere aside from Atlantic City. My mom and I really wanted her to get out and drive herself around, so this knitting place was the perfect opportunity for her to get out (and in return, we get awesome knitted things.... WHAT?! she is a master knitter.)
She drove over yesterday & signed up for classes.. & to celebrate, I knew that i *had* to make her a knitting bag & a knitting needle roll. :]
here is the shot together, the flash really drowned out the beauty of this fabric.. it was a remnant at Joannes.. its actually linen.. (I have never sewn linen before.. and probably never will again. it kept getting caught in the machine and snagging. it was seriously a pain. lol) the pattern i loved.. but i had no idea what to do with it. i played around with maybe a skirt.. maybe curtains? i had no idea.. so it sat in my fabric box until yesterday. as soon as i saw the fabric I *knew* i had to make it for her. I altered a pattern I had already made for my carry on airplane bag.. and made it much smaller.
Here's a shot of the bag itself.. i put her initials on the bag.. the "M" is embroidered on (yeah, thats my handwriting lol) and the "R" is a reverse applique.. which is another thing i have never done.. and it was actually pretty fun. seriously. im looking at the picture now.. and it didn't do my beautiful fabric justice. the straps are also made of the same fabric.. they're soft. :] On a side-note, I used a much firmer fabric on the interior.. like a stiff white fabric (the exterior is semi-sheer, so the white underneath really allowed the white parts of the linen to be bright.) UNFORTUNATELY, the white is the same fabric i obsessively make reusable bags out of.. so i didn't have enough.. luckily, i'm pretty creative.. so i added a piece of the linen to the inside of the bag. here, enjoy this awkward picture.
It still wasn't big enough, but i made it work for me. :]
This is the matching knitting needle roll. i originally wanted to do the exterior of the roll in this fabric, but i didn't have enough, so instead I used it for the pocket & the accents on the outside. "Mindy, that black fabric seems like satin." thats because it is. it is satin AKA the devils fabric. seriously. satin is evil. EVIL. i measured this thing exactly, and somehow the satin doubled in size. i dont know the size/length of knitting needles, so hopefully its not to gigantic.
SO. those were my knitting cases, now onto the other project. At the thrift store i discovered Kliban fabric. if you dont know Kliban, he is a cat (well, the artist that draws the cat is named Kliban.. but i have always called that cat Kliban.) anyway.. he is my mom's all time favorite cat. she has a soft spot for black and white cats.. so when i saw two queen sized Kliban sheets at the thrift store, i KNEW i had to buy it. :]
Here is the bag!
I have made this pattern for myself before.. LINK! It is seriously the easiest and cutest bag ever. it also has a zippered pocket.. and i am OBSESSED with zippers. i freakin love em.
The applique was a BITCH. period. I snipped the cat out of the sheet.. then pinned him down to sew him on.. well.. that didn't work. He was sliding around all over the place.. so I decided to use my handy dandy iron on applique paper.. snipped it out.. the realized i was supposed to do a mirror image of the cat. so i re-cut the iron on paper.. no big deal right? then I went on a half hour mission to find the iron.. only to remember that I had it downstairs the last time i was appliqueing. I battled with the iron until i finally got it on.. then i stitched over the ironed on kitty (which was another challenge.. that iron on makes stuff HARD.)
and here is the awkward "this is the liner" shot. it doesn't do it much justice, but its the kitty fabric on the inside. <3 i love it. and it has a zippered pocket. i always have trouble sewing the liner into the bag, i wish there was an easy way to do it.. im sure i'm just missing it somehow... :/ *sigh*
Oh well.
ANYWAY. this ends my picture heavy journey through crafting. today i hope to get a good piece of the costuming done.. Mom & I are going to Nanni's house today to say hi & so i can give her the bag.. then to Joannes & the thrift store to pick up pieces for the costumes. :]~ I'm very excited.
XOXO
